Analysis of Technical Differences between J1939 and Ordinary CAN Cables

Although J1939 cable and ordinary CAN cable are based on CAN bus technology, there are significant differences in design goals and performance indicators, mainly reflected in three dimensions: environmental adaptability, transmission reliability, and industry specificity.

In terms of electrical performance, J1939 cable adopts a reinforced differential signal transmission design, which can maintain stable communication over a wide temperature range, far exceeding the working temperature range of ordinary CAN cables. The cross-sectional area of the wire and the thickness of the insulation layer have been optimized to withstand the continuous vibration and mechanical stress during the operation of heavy vehicles.

In terms of mechanical structure, the shielding layer of J1939 cable adopts a multi stranded design with lower grounding resistance and excellent electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) performance, which is particularly suitable for strong electromagnetic interference environments such as construction machinery. The shielding treatment of ordinary CAN cables is relatively simple and difficult to meet the requirements of complex industrial scenarios.

In terms of certification system, J1939 cables must pass SAE J1939 special certification, while ordinary CAN cables only need to comply with the basic CAN protocol standards, which makes J1939 cables irreplaceable in the field of heavy-duty vehicles.
