Testing method for J1939 cable signal to quickly identify communication hazards

After the installation of J1939 cable is completed, or when signal abnormalities occur during use, timely signal testing can quickly identify communication hazards and avoid the expansion of faults. Many users lack professional testing knowledge and are unable to accurately determine whether the signal is normal, resulting in low efficiency in troubleshooting. Organize three commonly used signal testing methods that are simple and easy to operate, suitable for rapid on-site testing.

Method 1: Terminal Resistance Test: Use a multimeter to measure the terminal resistance at both ends of the cable bus. If the resistance deviates too much, it indicates that the terminal resistance is damaged or not installed properly, and needs to be replaced or reinstalled in a timely manner;

Method 2: Signal attenuation test. Use an oscilloscope to measure the signal amplitude at both ends of the cable. If the signal amplitude at the receiving end is attenuated more than the specified value compared to the transmitting end, it indicates that there is a signal attenuation problem with the cable. It is necessary to check the transmission distance, shielding layer status, or whether the conductor is oxidized.

Method 3: Interference Test: Place the cable close to a strong electrical line (simulating a vehicle interference environment) and observe the signal waveform. If the waveform is distorted or has too much clutter, it indicates that the cable's anti-interference performance is insufficient. It is necessary to check the grounding condition of the shielding layer or replace the cable with a better shielding effect. During testing, it is necessary to ensure that the testing tools are calibrated correctly and that the testing environment is consistent with the actual vehicle environment in order to accurately identify potential hazards. In daily use, regular signal testing can detect problems in advance and reduce the occurrence of malfunctions.
