Protocol differences between OBD2 and J1939
OBD2 (On Board Diagnostics II) is a mandatory standard for passenger car emission diagnosis, which uses CAN bus to transmit data, but the protocol focuses on fault codes and basic parameters (such as vehicle speed and RPM).
J1939 is a specialized protocol for heavy-duty vehicles such as trucks, buses, and construction machinery. Based on the CAN 2.0B extended frame, it defines complete parameter group numbers (PGN) and suspicious parameter numbers (SPN), and supports standardized transmission of complex data such as engine torque, oil temperature, and DPF status.
